Culture is, indeed, Chennai’s middle name. Be it Carnatic music recitals, Bharatanatyam performances, musical theatre or choir recital – this city does offer everybody a special ‘something’.
Music, however, has been an integral part of the Chennai life. Be it in theatre, or a choir recital, music has always drawn the attention of the city’s residents.
In the past seven months, I have witnessed a many interesting music programmes, including musical theatre, in the city.
It all began with the dawn of a music festival in November 2018, followed by the Margazhi season (i.e December 2018 to January 2019), musical plays by two theatre groups – Mellow Circle and Kuku Company, and of course a Gospel Choir recital.
While Chennai’s Carnatic classical environment is popular worldwide, little do the world around me know its musical theatre culture. Company, a play presented by the Kuku Company in June 2019 was one such presentation. Unique yet entertaining, the artists had set the ball rolling for an interesting theatrical experience.
