Weekends in India’s Garden City (or should I say the IT-city – Bengaluru), are bound to be monotonous and uneventful. Determined to make the best our time away from work, my brother, his wife and I decided to head out to a popular tourist destination. Interestingly, this spot was located approximately three-hours from Bengaluru!

The weather, luckily, was quite satisfactory. More importantly, the place was situated at the border between Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. Mesmerised by the clean yet green surroundings and the breathtaking sight of hills and valley, I was convinced that this Sunday was going to be memorable in its truest sense.

At the waterfalls

Hogenakkal derives its name from the words Hoge (smoke) and kal (rocks). Formed along the river Kaveri, these waterfalls are situated in the Dharmapuri district of Tamil Nadu.

We were, however, unfortunate as we could not witness the force and grandeur of the ‘main waterfall’. Nonetheless, the trip guaranteed us of a fun boat ride along with the banks of the river, allowing us to relish the beauty of nature and serene surroundings. You could enjoy a fun expedition in coracle which has a diameter of approximately seven feet.

A word of caution: Like many river banks, Hogenekkal is also prone to floods during the monsoon season. Hence, it is recommended that you do your research about the place and speak to a few authorities with regards to your visit to the area.

You could indeed consider the option of using public transport. However, it would be wiser to have a vehicle at your own disposal. Eatable and water ought to be on the top of your ‘essentials’ list. Also, carry a change of clothes and sufficient liquid cash. The authorities and the boat riders still believe in the term hard-cash and are overwhelmed if the people are ‘kind’. The boat rides cost approximately Rs. 500 per head for a period of three hours. Hence, look before you leap (literally!).

The environment was ideal for the stressed-out soul. Personally, I enjoyed the trip for it allowed me to spend some quality time with two very special members of my family.
