Warriors of coconut land – Part 3

Kalaripayattu is closely associated with Yoga. The warm-up exercises that the disciple is required to do before the intense combat routines play a key role in strengthening the body’s bones, joints, muscles and mind. Most importantly, it enhances his or her lung capacity.

NOTE: Do not do these exercise without consulting your physician. Though these exercises appear simple, if done wrongly, the consequences are grave.

Warm-up exercise 1:

This is a simple yet effective workout that helps to strengthen the neck, shoulder, hips, back, calf muscles, feet and hands. Breathe in as you raise your hands and bend backwards, breathe out when you bend forward to touch your toes. Repeat the exercise thrice.

Warm-up exercise 2:

This exercise focuses on thighs, the shoulders, neck, back and the knee. Breathe in as you raise your hands and bend backwards, breathe out when you bend forward to touch the ground. The exercise has to be repeated thrice on both legs.

Warm-up exercise 3:

This is similar to the first warm-up exercise. However, it predominantly focuses on strengthening the hips and the backbone.

Breathe in as you raise your hands and stand erect, breathe out when you bend forward to touch the ground. When you have to alternate between both legs, breathe in when you raise your right hand, breathe out when you raise your left-hand. Do not bend your knees.
