Warriors of coconut land – Part 2

Like any ancient martial art,  Kalaripayattu begins with a prayer.

The Namaskaram is a salutation follows the traditional belief of Mata, Pita, Guru, Deva (i.e Mother,  Father, Teacher and God).

The routine

Step 1

Step1

This stage is dedicated to one’s mother. The disciple stands erect, the feet kept apart parallel to his or her shoulder and the hands folded in prayer.

Step 2

step2

This stage is dedicated to one’s father. The disciple turns around, from left to right, with the hands folded, feet parallel to his or her shoulders.

Step 3

Step1

This stage is dedicated to the teacher. The disciple turns around, facing east, with the feet parallel to the shoulders,  hands folded in prayer (similar to step 1).

Step 4

The disciple touches the floor three times, as a salutation to one’s mother, father, teacher and God, with the right hand. The feet are placed parallel to the shoulders, and the left hand is placed on the chest as a mark of regard. While doing so, the feet ought to be kept parallel to the shoulders and should not be bent.

Step 5

Step1

The disciple turns around, from left to right (the posture is similar to Step 1). The disciple touches the floor with the right hand placing the left hand on the chest.

Step 6

step2

The disciple turns around, this time from the right to left (the posture is similar to step 2). The disciple, then, touches the floor with the right hand placing the left hand on the chest.

Step 7

The disciple turns around, from left to right (the posture is similar to Step 1). The disciple touches the floor four times with the right hand placing the left hand on the chest. While the first three times are similar to Stage 4, the fourth time  requires to one to place their palm flat on the ground, ensuring that the knees aren’t bent. This is done as a mark of respect to Mother Earth.

Step 8step5

The disciple places the left arm on the chest and raises his right foot and holds still as he or she stretches to touch the ‘big toe.’ The foot is then placed on the ground and the disciple stands erect, placing his feet together while praying.
